Camp ENERGY will deliver a behavior modification intervention for adolescents who desire to lose weight and improve their health. Preventing obesity through healthy changes requires a program to teach realistic, life-long habits. Focusing on the fundamentals of exercise, nutrition, emotions, recording, goals, and how it affects you Camp ENERGY will achieve change.
Open to 30 healthy teens between the ages of 14-17 who are in the 85th percentile or above for height and weight requirements, Camp ENERGY has been designed to provide an environment that will stimulate changes in lifestyle for lasting health benefits.
Participants will visit Camp Victory in Millville, PA from May 29-31, 2009 and return to the grounds from Oct. 17-18, 2009. Between the two sessions, education will continue to motivate and engage them in their new lifestyle. After six months and again at one year, participants will review their progress and set new goals.
Campers will receive a booklet, handouts, materials & "healthy lifestyles" tool kit with pedometer, exercise ball, calorie counter, food scale to help them continue healthy habits and lifestyle modifications they learn at Camp Energy.
Unlike traditional special needs or weight loss camps, this is not just an experience, but treatment through education in the camp setting. Camp Energy has a long-term aim of providing a programmatic and sustainable solution to the problem of obesity in our youth.
Camp founders Jerry Foley, staff recruiter for the Center for Health Research, and Rachel Bastian, senior research assistant, Center for Health Research, are available to discuss this opportunity. You can reach them at campenergy@gmail.com
