Camp ENERGY - FAQ

Imagine a time when you were faced with both challenges and opportunities. For some, this may invoke a childhood memory of going to camp. In this environment you may have found courage in a daring situation, strength to meet new people, or a new activity that peaked your interest. It is in this environment that you grew and learned to make change happen.

Camp Energy is built on the foundation that creating this environment will provide an opportunity for growth and change for adolescents to improve their health. Although at the core, this camp is an intervention to make healthy changes, we are excited to provide an outlet for kids to learn, connect, and have fun.

In its inaugural year, Camp Energy will provide 30 adolescents and their parents with the knowledge and practical skills to lose weight through nutrition and exercise. We will bring them to the grounds of Camp Victory in Millville for a weekend in May (29-31) and a weekend in October (17-18). During these weekends we will utilize the campgrounds engaging in different activities and begin to teach healthy changes based on the manual of the current Adolescent Weight Management study. Throughout the four months in between, education will continue with the kids in the hopes of motivating and engaging them in their new lifestyle. We will also ask that they meet after one year to review their progress and to set new goals.

Camp Energy is currently funded by the Degenstein Foundation, the Geisinger Children's Miracle Network and Geisinger's Women's Auxiliary. We are currently recruiting volunteer staff and adolescents for the program. If you want to offer ideas, support, or volunteer time during the weekends, see Rachel Bastian or Jerry Foley.
